The Fire Department
The South Lyon Fire Department (SLFD) is located in the southwest corner of Oakland County. The Department provides firefighting, emergency medical, hazardous material mitigation, extrication, water rescue, and other technical rescue services to the 12,000 residents of South Lyon. Annually, the Department responds to over 1,200 emergency incidents. The city is protected by two Engines, one Ladder, and a Rescue. The Fire Department maintains an ISO Class 3 rating.
SLFD is a member of the Mutual Aid Box Alarm Association (MABAS) 3201. SLFD maintains reciprocal automatic mutual aid agreements with the Lyon Township Fire Department (Oakland County) and Green Oak Township Fire Department (Livingston County).
SLFD has a full-time fire chief who works business hours, Monday through Friday. There are 25 part-time and paid-on-call firefighters/EMT’s. SLFD generally has 3 to 5 high school aged fire cadets on staff.
The fire station is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
- Weekdays: Between the hours of 6 am to noon, there is 1 firefighter/EMT staffing the station. The remaining 18-hours of the day (noon to 6 am), there are 2 firefighter/EMT’s staffing the station.
- Weekends: There are two firefighter/EMT's, staffing the station all 24 hours of the day.
The daily shift staffing is supplemented with paid-on-call firefighter/EMT's responding to major incidents and backfilling the station on minor incidents.
Fire Chief
Joey Thorington was hired as Fire Chief on February 23rd of 2021. Chief Thorington retired from the City of Dearborn Fire Department after 24 years of service with his last eight years as the department's Deputy Fire Chief. Chief Thorington has a bachelor’s degree from Central Michigan University and a master’s degree from Eastern Michigan University. He also holds Fire Staff and Command certification from Eastern Michigan University and Executive Fire Officer certification from the National Fire Academy.
